GOST YEARBOOK AWARD 2023

Winner: Madeleine Waller

"In addition to the beautiful use of natural light and composition, we found

Madeleine's image intriguing - who is she and why is she holding the snake in the lake? When making books we always look for images which convey a story, and here we felt there was a story waiting to be told."

GOST Books is an independent visual arts and photography publisher based in London. They pride themselves on an uncategorisable output of diverse subject matter and design: from a chronicle of seven men claiming to be the Messiah; a study of Turkish soap operas; art works inspired by the largest breeding grounds for flamingos in the Southern Hemisphere; archive photographs from the Mexico City police department; to portraits of winners of state-run competitions in Belarus

Everyday Lives - An outdoor exhibition of portraits celebrating the remarkable people of Stanley.  Commissioned by the Forge Arts Organisation in Stanley Durham.

Inspired by Tommy Armstrong, the pitman poet, who celebrated in song the mining communities of the past.

This exhibition captures through images the same courage, resilience, compassion and humour that live on in Stanley

These two images have been selected as finalists in the KLPA Photo Awards and will be on display in Kuala Lumpur until 2nd October and in the 8th Suwon International Photography Festival, in Seoul from 4th to 10th October.

From the Series. "I Spend 150 Hours alone each week."  This set of portraits aims to  highlight the loneliness a lot of older people experience.

I hope these images show both her vulnerability and her resilience.
