Mantelpiece Stories, commissioned by Bolton Museum and Library is a series of portraits and short films about six Bolton households. It explores the emotional attachment we have to the objects and possessions we choose to keep and display in our homes. With special thanks to Verona, Jenneh, Shonagh, Monty Ganshyam and Carole. Exhibition from 12th September 2020 to January 2021.
The exhibition was run in conjunction with ceramist Richard Slee's response to the Mass Observation 1937 Mantelpiece Reports. The Directive, tasked its national panel of volunteers with sharing what was on their mantelpieces. The resulting reports demonstrate how the seemingly insignificant objects in our homes are in fact full of meaning, and led the organisation to conclude that we are what we live with.
